Secretary Detzner introduces Florida Heritage Month
For the past eleven years, between March 15 through April 15, set
aside as Florida Heritage Month, the Department of State has encouraged
citizens to gain a better understanding and appreciation of Florida's
history and culture. The offices of Governor Rick Scott and Secretary of
State Ken Detzner have planned this month-long tribute to heighten
awareness of our state's rich cultural heritage. In 2013, Florida
reached a significant milestone, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de
León's arrival on Florida's east coast. Building on the success of Viva
Florida 500, the Florida Department of State is committed to continuing
its work with partners statewide to promote cultural and historical
experiences through a multi-year campaign, Viva Florida, which will
highlight 12,000 years of Florida's people, places and cultural
achievements.
This year's Florida Heritage Month theme is "The Sites and Sounds of Florida," which commemorates the many great places that make Florida special and the important people and cultures that have defined them. Please join us as we celebrate and honor the achievements of Floridians past and present for their outstanding talents, and excellence in preserving Florida's heritage and cultural arts. Please join us in celebrating the many historical sites, museums, libraries, and the visual and performing arts, which flourish in our state.
