John Singer Sargent -- HAPPY BIRTHDAY -- by Florida Fine Art Blog

John Singer Sargent  (January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925)

John Singer Sargent was a working man's artist, never concerning himself with what his critics called his anachronous state.  John wanted to sell paintings, not push boundaries, and he became the premier portrait artist of his time.  His supporters and clients were the important people of the day.  He completed hundreds of portraits for European Royalty, US Presidents, Generals and Business Tycoons.

A world traveler, Sargent even managed to make it to Florida in the early 1900's.  The critics have come back around to recognize the artist's work and his prices at auction have never been higher.

There are two great quotes attributed to John Singer Sargent that I have always loved:
1. "A portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth."

2. "Every time I paint a portrait I lose a friend."
