Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality.

In January, 2014 The Dali will launch a fresh exhibit featuring an important selection of Andy Warhol's work on loan from The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. "Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality." explores how Warhol learned from Dali's public visibility and was equally attuned to the images derived from mass culture. This exhibit considers Warhol's little commented on engagement with other artists through his own painting, how he constructed an approach to the image in terms of celebrity and fame, and finally his treatment of painting and image in terms of human mortality.

“What is unusual is the mix of materials including archival photographs depicting  Warhol in the 1950s. You will see both photos of and by Warhol. There are portraits of dozens of artists and celebrities that Warhol worked with, ”explained The Dalí’s Special Exhibitions Curator Dr. William Jeffett. “Visitors will find nine acrylic and silk screen paintings of Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, amongst many other works."

In addition to the variety of paintings, prints, photography and films, a special film installation provides visitors their “15 minutes of fame.” A simulated Warhol screen-test is set to film visitors as they sit in front of the camera for about a minute. The installation harkens back to the film style Andy Warhol experimented with in his days at The Factory. Visitors will be able to capture, save ,and share their “movie” online.

Both the Dali museum in St Petersburg and the Warhol in Pittsburgh are must see museums.  Both are perfect examples of how to build a modern art museum/organization.  They should also be examples to cities that are looking for ways to attract cultural tourists.  The museums are big draws and that translates to more hotel rooms and rental cars booked, restaurants visited and shops explored.  I can tell you from personal experience when given a choice  of destinations in the North East I have flown into Pittsburgh specifically because I could fit in a side trip to the Warhol museum. premiering on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:30 pm.  The series features NSU Museum of Art Director and Chief Curator Bonnie Clearwater in conversation with eight prominent art collectors who share their personal stories of building prestigious collections of contemporary and modern art, and the passions and rewards that motivate them.  The series airs as part of WPBT's Art Loft, and provides fascinating insight into how each collection evolved.  Featured are collectors Irma Braman, Estelle and Paul Berg, Ella Cisneros, Andrew Hall, Boris Hirmas, Rosalind Jacobs and Martin Margulies.  Bonnie Clearwater is the former Director and Chief Curator of MOCA, North Miami, and these conversations were filmed in March 2013 on the occasion of MOCA's 15th anniversary.

I'm excited to watch this series.  Some of the finest collections in the world are in Miami and the included panel of collectors are at the top of the list.  They are more than art buyers, they are passionate advocates and conservators of art and art history.  Many have already opened up their collections to the public with large exhibition spaces in Wynwood.  During Art Basel week most of the collections are available to view. The People’s Choice Award is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest funding the best ideas for the arts. Winners of both the challenge and the People’s Choice will be announced in December.

The red-hot art market could yield $1.2 billion-plus in sales when New York’s two-week art-auction season kicks off Tuesday.

Andy Warhol’s “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” reportedly may fetch as much as $80 million at Sotheby’s postwar and contemporary art sale Nov. 13.

And Warhol may be upstaged by the Nov. 12 Christie’s sale of a triptych by the British painter Francis Bacon, “Three Studies of Lucian Freud.” Estimates say that may draw as much as $86 million in the sky-high market fueled by the influx of Russian, Chinese and Arab buyers. — it’s possible that the Warhol or the Bacon could set a record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.A huge oil by Gerhard Richter set the record of $37 million last spring at Sotheby’s.

The current champ is Edvard Munch’s iconic “The Scream,” which went for nearly $120 million at Sotheby’s in spring 2012.

Travel 500 years back in time to explore Florida’s early colonial history in the new temporary exhibit at the Museum of Florida History.

Imagining La Florida: Ponce de León and the Quest for the Fountain of Youth is an interactive exhibit that recounts Florida history from the preparation of Ponce de León’s voyage from Spain to the establishment of Fort Mose in 1739. Organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) of Spain and the Spain-Florida Foundation and curated by Dr. J. Michael Francis, it is a collaboration of the Spanish Embassy in Washington D.C., and the Spanish Consulate in Miami.

The exhibit is divided into four distinct sections, each chronicling a different aspect of Florida’s colonial history. Begin your voyage aboard a replica Spanish galleon in Seville, Spain, and travel through the history of Florida, taking in such sights as the founding of St. Augustine, the rich culture of native populations, and the founding of Fort Mose, the first free black settlement in the United States. The exhibit concludes with an interactive floor display highlighting the truth about Ponce de León’s quest for the fountain of youth, one of the most enduring foundation myths in U.S. history.

 

The evening includes live music, hors d’oeuvres, and a presentation by Florida historian Dr. J. Michael Francis.

NEW YORK — Potential buyers will have to dig deep as New York City’s frenzied fall auction season gets underway with blockbuster works of art poised to set records.

 Among the blue-chip offerings is Andy Warhol’s “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster),” a provocative double-panel painting that Sotheby’s estimates could bring as much as $80 million at its Nov. 13 postwar and contemporary sale. The current Warhol auction record is $71.7 million for “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I),” set in 2007.

A day earlier, Christie’s is offering a 1969 triptych by Francis Bacon of his friend and artist Lucian Freud. The auction house says “Three Studies of Lucian Freud” could topple the $86 million auction record for the artist set in 2008 for his 1976 “Triptych.”

It remains to be seen if either can surpass the nearly $120 million paid at Sotheby’s in spring 2012 for Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.” The painting is the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.

Warhol produced four paintings in the “Death and Disaster” series. The other three are in museums.

Measuring 8 feet by 13 feet, the 1963 silver work captures the immediate aftermath of a car crash, a twisted body sprawled across its mangled interior. It has been seen in public only once in the past 26 years.

Sotheby’s also is offering a portrait of Elizabeth Taylor by Warhol. “Liz #1 (Early Colored Liz)” is estimated to fetch between $20 million and $30 million.
Christie’s also has an iconic Warhol, “Coca-Cola (3),” at its Nov. 12 sale with a pre-sale estimate of $40 million to $60 million.

The two-week season begins this week with impressionist and modern works of art.

Guy Harvey Named Florida House Distinguished Artists

Dr. Guy Harvey, widely recognized as one of the world’s finest marine wildlife artists, was presented the Florida House on Capitol Hill’s 2013 Distinguished Artist Award at a ceremony at Flagler College Thursday for his prolific works reflecting Florida’s culture and environment.

With his background as a marine biologist, diver, photographer and angler, Harvey has an extensive portfolio of marine wildlife art and is recognized as one of the world’s top marine wildlife artists as well as a conservationist. In collaboration with Nova Southeastern University in Dania Beach, Fla., he formed the Guy Harvey Research Institute, which helps manage and protect fishery resources around the world. The mission of the institute is to provide scientific information to understand, conserve and effectively manage the world’s marine fishes and their ecosystems.

“I am honored to be chosen for this award and to be included among other artists for whom Florida has been an inspiration,” said Harvey. “Florida has a rich history of abundant and diverse wildlife. However, some of the animals I love to paint are under pressure and need our support.”

Presented annually, The Distinguished Artist Award recognizes an artist who has achieved significant recognition from their peers and has created work reflecting Florida’s culture, environment, history, or people. Previous winners of the Distinguished Artist Award include The Highwaymen, Jackson Walker, Christopher M. Still, Clyde Butcher and A.E. “Beanie” Backus.

“Every award given marks progress toward our goal of preserving Florida’s culture,” said Bart Hudson, CEO and president of Florida House on Capitol Hill. “Florida House on Capitol Hill is proud to recognize Guy for the work he has done for Florida, from his floor-to-ceiling murals at the Ft. Lauderdale airport to his conservation efforts of Florida’s marine ecosystems.”

$1B trove of Nazi-looted art found in closet 

 
A $1.35 billion treasure trove of art works apparently looted by the Nazis — including pieces by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall — have been found stashed in a storage closet of a reclusive 80-year-old Munich man, the German magazine Focus reports.

The magazine says a Matisse painting found among the hidden items once belonged to French art dealer Paul Rosenberg, who represented Picasso and Matisse and other artists. He fled France in 1940.
The magazine says investigators have valued the works at about 1 billion euros, the equivalent of $1.35 billion.
Focus reports that the works, hidden behind cans of food and cartons of juice, were discovered by chance two years ago as a result of a probe by tax authorities of Cornelius Gurlitt, whose father, Hildebrand Gurlitt, was an art collector and former museum director.

We do not accept any mailed-in entries, nor will we return any artwork via mail for any of our "all locals welcome" shows.

This video shows Christopher, one of Florida's finest painters, explaining his latest work.  "La Florida" celebrates the 500 anniversary of the naming of Florida by Ponce de leon.  Listening to Christopher you can begin to understand all the scholarly work that goes into making sure the paintings are as historically accurate as possible.  All of the artists work is important to Florida and I hope someday all of the paintings can be together in a museum so that future generations will benefit from them.  For now we have the web and Christopher's studio shows.  GL

The future of the city-owned Detroit Institute of Arts — and the community's cultural soul — is at stake as debate rages on a possible sell-off of some of its treasures

DETROIT — The Christie's appraisers enter on Mondays, when the museum is closed, and either inspect what's on the walls or ask to see some of the thousands of works not on display, sometimes sending Detroit Institute of Arts technicians on half-day missions to find pieces in deep storage and prepare them for examination.

People on the local cultural scene tend to think that it won't happen, that the city ultimately won't sell off some or all of this world-class art museum's collection to help cover the more than $18 billion in debt obligations cited in Detroit's recent bankruptcy filing.

Selling a Van Gogh, a Rembrandt, a Matisse — unthinkable, no? They wouldn't irreparably tarnish what may be Detroit's prime cultural gem just as the city is positioning itself to bounce back like its previously bankrupt car companies have done, would they?

Nova Southeastern University’s Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale has received a $1.5 million challenge grant.
The David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation would pay the money over three years to match all other funds raised. That means other donors need to step up to double the value of their contributions.
The gift comes several months after NSU hired Bonnie Clearwater to lead the museum.
The Horvitz family is on the board of governors of the museum, and David Horvitz is the chairman.
“This inspiring challenge grant has already sparked an enthusiastic outpouring of support,” Clearwater said. “The museum has so far received nearly $300,000 in gifts as a response to this gift. David and Francie Horvitz have long recognized the importance of supporting the arts and community, and we are deeply grateful for their continued commitment to the museum. “

Broward County Sports No. 1 Ranking 'State of the Arts' Specialty License Plate

For more than a decade, Broward County has ranked # 1 in the State of Florida, in sales of the Arts License Plate. This revenue-building 'State of the Arts' License Plate Program has delivered more than $1.3 million in revenue to the County. The arts tag fund has been a valuable resource used, among other things, to help plan and develop Florida's first affordable live/work housing projects for artists, Sailboat Bend Artists' Lofts, and is earmarked for a second live/work space in Broward County.

The Florida Arts License Plate Program was created by the Legislature in 1994. Funds collected through the sale of these specialty plates are distributed to the counties where the plates are sold and are used to support arts organizations, programs, and activities within that county. Artist Stephen Kline, whose exhibitions are displayed worldwide, designed the multi-color Florida 'State of the Arts' tag.

The first-time fee for the plate is $32 over the usual cost at vehicle registration renewal time; and for every State of the Arts License Plate in Broward County purchased, $20 is returned to Broward County's local arts agency, the Broward Cultural Division. More than1.2 million cars are registered in Broward County, and of those, more than 14,500 carry an arts license plate. Are you driving for the arts?

New plates may be obtained in person, through the Department of Motor Vehicles Tag offices, or by requesting them during your registration by mail. Individuals who lease vehicles may ask their dealer for the plate.
Broward Cultural Division's portfolio of services includes: county-wide public information; community cultural planning; financial and marketing incentives; capacity-building technical assistance for artists and cultural organizations; artist fellowships; pre-development and investment in cultural facilities (ArtServe's arts incubator, ArtsParks and Artist Lofts); arts education; urban design and county facility enhancement through the Public Art & Design Program.
