Arts & Culture Day in Tallahassee - March 18th - by Florida Fine Art Blog

http://culturebuildsflorida.org/about/

Arts & Culture Day in Tallahassee - March 18th 2014

March 18th is the day that art organizations and advocates meet to walk the halls of the capital and talk with legislators to discuss public funding of the arts in Florida.  Public Funding in Florida has been cut by more than 70% since 2009.  Although we have seen increases in the past few years the State has a long way to go to bring the funding back up to the level that matchs our State Arts Organization’s needs.  The message we are delivering is simple; The Arts mean Jobs.  GL

Substantial Returns to Government Treasuries — $5 Returned For Each State $1 Invested
Florida's not-for-profit arts and culture industry "delivers more than $446.5 million in local and state government revenue.” In 2008, $250 million was returned to Florida’s state treasury and $200 million to local governments.*

Supports Over 88,326 Full-Time JOBS Throughout Florida
According to Dun & Bradstreet as of January 2012, Florida is home to 67,487 arts-related businesses that employ 217,406 people. These arts-centric businesses are vital to help build and sustain economic diversity and vibrancy.  In 2008, Florida's not-for-profit arts and culture organizations supported over 88,326 full-time equivalent jobs that generated $2.1 billion in household income to local residents.*

Builds A Diverse and Innovative State Economy
Florida's arts and culture not-for-profit industry generates over $3.1 billion in local economic activity: last reported amounts are $1.4 billion spent by the not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations and $1 billion in event-related spending by their audiences. According to such non-arts organizations such as the Florida Chamber and Associated Industries of Florida, our arts and culture resources are vital to build a strong, diverse, and innovative economy.*

Expands Tourism Throughout Florida
According to Florida Tax Watch Tourism Research Report, 74.9% of visitors to Florida participate in cultural activities. The report goes on to say we need to understand the factors that make Florida an attractive destination and retain and enhance those factors. Research demonstrates that of the 58-million attendees (84% residents) and visitors (16%) at Florida arts and culture events, the non-local attendees spend an average of 137 percent more (lodging, meals, transportation, souvenirs, etc.) than resident attendees per person: $57.49 vs. $24.25.*

Gives Florida the Competitive Edge to Attract and Retain Key Businesses
Part of the criteria used by both Scripps Research and Burnham Institute for Medical Research on where to locate in Florida was how healthy the arts and culture resources were in the areas they considered. They decided upon Palm Beach and Orange counties, both replete with quality and diverse arts and culture resources. Cities are competing to attract new, promising businesses; and “international studies show that the winners will be communities that offer an abundance of arts and culture opportunities."

Develops Strong and Effective Private-Public Partnerships
Over 50% of Florida’s arts and culture not-for-profit organizations’ annual operating budgets must be raised through individual contributions; fund-raising events; corporate and foundation support; and local, state, and federal governmental grants. State support is critical to help leverage other revenue sources critical to sustain this creative industry — jobs, programming, arts education, and greater access for more residents and tourists.

Request Restoration of State Investment for Greater Impact
Florida's investment in its arts and culture resources is now 73% less than it was seven years ago. In FY 2007, Florida invested $34.4 million or $1.86 per capita in statewide arts, arts education, and culture grants. It now invests $9.3 million or 48¢ per capita. Working together through public and private partnerships, let’s rebuild and restore Florida's investment in this critically important creative industry. It’s an industry vital to the state’s economy, education success, tourism, community development, and quality of life for residents of and visitors to Florida.

Bruce Helander - 2014 Florida Artist Hall of Fame Inductee

This Tuesday night in Tallahassee Florida, Bruce Helander will be inducted into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame. Established by the Florida Legislature in 1986, the Florida Artists Hall of Fame recognizes persons, living or deceased, who have made significant contributions to the arts in Florida either as performing or practicing artists in individual disciplines. These individuals contribute to Florida's national or international reputation as a state with a strong and sustained commitment toward the development of cultural excellence.

Bruce along with fellow inductee Tom Petty will be given this high award by Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner.  I will be there representing the Florida Council on Arts and Culture as part of Florida Heritage Awards.

I am excited to meet Mr. Helander as I have been an admirer of his for some time.  Mr Helader had a gallery on Worth Avenue that was a model for me when I was just starting to think of the gallery business.  My father would take me to Bruce's to show an example of how a successful gallery was run.

Along with being an artist and gallerist Bruce is an art advocate as well.  Bruce is the Editor-in-Chief of The Art Economist and currently contributes to The Huffington Post. He has been a contributor to numerous magazines, including Art and Living, ARTnews and The New Yorker.  GL

 Bruce Helander

From Bruce's Website Bio;
Bruce Helander is an artist whose specialty is collage and assemblage. He has a master’s degree in painting from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, where he later became the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of the college. He is a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and recently won the South Florida Cultural Consortium fellowship for professional achievement in the visual arts.

Helander arrived in Palm Beach in 1982 from New York City, where he published Art Express magazine. He quickly established a cutting edge gallery on Worth Avenue that thrived for thirteen years. During that time he opened a second gallery on West Broadway in New York City. He was also a commissioner for ARCOM in Palm Beach and the vice-president of the Worth Avenue Association. He is active in the south Florida art scene and is on the board of directors at the Armory Art Center.

Secretary Detzner introduces Florida Heritage Month

For the past eleven years, between March 15 through April 15, set aside as Florida Heritage Month, the Department of State has encouraged citizens to gain a better understanding and appreciation of Florida's history and culture. The offices of Governor Rick Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner have planned this month-long tribute to heighten awareness of our state's rich cultural heritage. In 2013, Florida reached a significant milestone, the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León's arrival on Florida's east coast. Building on the success of Viva Florida 500, the Florida Department of State is committed to continuing its work with partners statewide to promote cultural and historical experiences through a multi-year campaign, Viva Florida, which will highlight 12,000 years of Florida's people, places and cultural achievements.

This year's Florida Heritage Month theme is "The Sites and Sounds of Florida," which commemorates the many great places that make Florida special and the important people and cultures that have defined them. Please join us as we celebrate and honor the achievements of Floridians past and present for their outstanding talents, and excellence in preserving Florida's heritage and cultural arts. Please join us in celebrating the many historical sites, museums, libraries, and the visual and performing arts, which flourish in our state.

Art Business Workshop at Art Serve - posted by Florida Fine Art Blog

Florida Workshop Series Teaches Business to Artists

Baltimore, MD March 10, 2014 - The Arts Business Institute, will present a series of four business workshops in Florida this April. This series is co-sponsored by Florida Craftsmen, a statewide organization promoting fine craft art. The schedule begins with a workshop event in Ft. Lauderdale on March 31 – April, followed by an Orlando workshop on April 2-3, a workshop in St. Petersburg April 7-8, and a workshop event in Tallahassee on April 10-11.

Each business workshop presents sound principles that address the difficulties many artists face in marketing and selling their work, as well as specialized information from experts in the industry.

Presentations include: How to Wholesale, Building Gallery Relationships, Pricing for Profit and Sales Strategies. Personal critiques and consultations are available on the second day of each event for artists who pre-schedule. Tuition is $95.00.

The focus of each workshop is to assist creative entrepreneurs in moving from part-time to full-time businesses through better understanding their target market and how to reach it effectively.

Arts Business Institute founder Wendy Rosen says, “Many of our students have found our intensive workshop experience transformational, and we are pleased to see artists who have attended increase their sales and grow their businesses. One of our most popular workshop features is the personalized business consultation, where we address challenges and discuss specific strategies for the individual

Details and registration information can be found on The Arts Business Institute website.

The Arts Business Institute is a 503(c) nonprofit organization devoted to helping artists and craftspeople launch and grow successful businesses. For the past sixteen years, ABI has worked with artists and craftspeople to develop their businesses and provide a pathway to the wholesale marketplace.

The Arts Business Institute can be found online at www.ArtsBusinessInstitute.org.

The good folks at Art Business Institute sent the above presser over and I'm happy to post it.  The seminar topics sound informative.  I haven't seen any of the e-course, books or cd's they are selling so can't vouch for them but there probably worth a look. I can tell you when I was just starting out I took an art selling workshop, given in a hotel conference room.  I wish I could remember the mans name who taught the course to give him proper credit but it was 20 years ago.  Anyway, I didn't have high hopes for the course at the time but I still draw on the information I learned in that course all these years later.  Sometimes you need someone who has compiled information from experience to set you in the right direction.
They also have a great website with tips and links to articles worth a look.  I really like the artist page which highlights artists with a short interview, pictures of their work and a link to the artists websites.

As I've mentioned in past posts, Art Serve, the venue for these workshops in Fort Lauderdale is a great resource for artist in South Florida. I highly recommend taking advantage of all they have to offer.  GL

Acclaimed Haitian Artist Edouard Duval-Carrié Debutes at Perez Art Museum
Imagined Landscapes
March 13th to August 31st 2014
Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes is an exhibition project involving a series of new works generated over the past year by the Haitian-born, Miami-based artist Edouard Duval-Carrié (b. 1954). Known for his innovative adaptions of traditional Haitian iconography, which he engages in order to address contemporary social and political conditions, Duval-Carrié is presenting a series of large-scale paintings and sculptures. Contrasting his signature use of strong colors, this project presents works executed entirely in black and silver glitter. Involving extensive research, Imagined Landscapes presents lush tropical scenes that reference specific nineteenth-century paintings executed in the Caribbean and Florida. These paintings, by artists such as William Heade and Frederick Church, were commissioned as part of Colonial interests in promoting economic development of these areas of the world. The artists used pictorial effects, imagination and fictions to present the Caribbean as the “New Eden,” a fertile land of possibility. Duval-Carrié’s works translate these historical images into his own contemporary aesthetic language, in order to address the manner in which the tropics of the Caribbean and Florida continue to be sold as tropical paradises, in ways that often obscure economic and social disparities that continue to be perpetuated in these contexts.

What could be my favorite piece from the permanent collection of the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Edouard Duval-Carrié has an installation wall mount on the first floor.  "The Indigo Room or Is Memory Water Soluble."  Often overlooked because the piece hangs on a wall not seen from the main gallery's. It's a powerful work of art.  The piece is a collaboration with students from Dillard Center for the Arts. Beautiful blues and greens back-lit for an effect like the large stain glass found in churches.  The church effect is amplified by the small quite space the piece is hung in.  The story told is one of immigration across water, a story familiar to every American's family story.  The dangers and uncertainty of the journey are represented by the students in the painted tiles as is the price the country left behind pays for all it's sons and daughters leaving for good. Check out the schedule of events here

My Great Grandfather came down to South Florida around 1912 for the fishing and my family has had a line in the water ever since.  With news of the fifth or sixth snow storm in a row up north this year I am thankful the fishing was good on my Great Grandfathers first trip.   Fishing has always been a lure to Northerners with ideas of catching giant ocean game fish. Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and the Golden Age of Painting - Orlando Museum of Art - posted by Florida Fine Art Blog

Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and the Golden Age of Painting Orlando Museum of Art
January 25 – May 25, 2014

Paintings From the Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky

Tremendous changes swept Europe between 1600 and 1800, the years in which the art in this exhibition was produced. Religious upheavals transformed the way people thought about and utilized art. Trade routes to faraway lands, such as China and India, became more established, ensuring a steady stream of exotic goods for European consumers. Advances in the sciences transformed long held views on the way the universe worked and the place of humans within that universe. Technical aspects of art making were honed and codified, as art academies grew in number and power.

These exciting times resulted in a golden age of European painting. The number of artists and the number of art collectors grew exponentially during this period, as the fine arts reached an increasingly wider audience. This exhibition will feature 71 paintings from this remarkable period by Rembrandt van Rijn, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony Van Dyck, Jan Steen, Jacob van Ruisdael, William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough and Pompeo Batoni, among many others.

Comprised of the major genres of painting that were popular at this time – portraits, religious paintings, landscapes, scenes of everyday life, still lifes and interpretations of classical antiquity – this exhibition will illustrate both the people and the objects that made the two centuries between 1600 and 1800 such a rich cultural age. Highlighting work from Italy, France, Spain, Flanders, the Netherlands, Germany and England, this exhibition will illustrate how the tremendous changes in religion and science, coupled with the economic growth that swept Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, gave way to a period of incredible artistic creation.

Looks like a good program put on by two important local organizations; the Broward Cultural Division and Art Serve. Whenever I'm asked by artists just starting out where they can network and gain knowledge about the process of selling artwork I direct them to Art Serve.  The business side of the creative process is often the most misunderstood and undervalued.  GL

Glavovic Studio - Bringing Modern to South Florida

Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio is single handily transforming the design of our building scape in wonderful new ways.  Hollywood Arts Park, The Kennedy Homes on Broward, The Girls Cub, Young At Art Museum and the Museum Stairs of the Fort Lauderdale museum of Art are just a few of her completed designs.  Quickly racking up the awards and garnering much deserved attention demand for Margi's work seems at a real high. With so much of South Florida needing a makeover I hope she is rewarded with more and more projects.  Smart, clean and organic is how I would describe the work.  Its exciting to have her working here and I look forward to seeing all that she accomplishes.

Kennedy Homes - Glavovic Studio

Kennedy Homes, pictured above has had all of its 8 new buildings certified LEED Gold and was recently featured with artist Laz Ojalde at CB2's blog.

Arts Park in Hollywood Young Circle - Glavovic Studio

Every feature is integrated into the design of the 10 acre Arts Park so that what looks like a flat landscape from afar grows into a topography of built in benches, children's play areas and interactive water features.  The promenades meander over hills and valleys creating spaces not seen until explored.  Art is the theme and the park even includes a public Visual Arts Pavilion with a professional Glass Studio where you can watch glass blowing demonstrations. City festivals and music festivals are always fun in the park.  Across the street is the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, one of he best museums in South Florida.

Another clean design with sharp lines that seem to come right out of the ground.  The interior is even more impressive than the exterior and the space is perfectly functional for the need. GL

How China Is Changing The Balance Of Power In The Art World - posted by Florida Fine Art Blog

How China Is Changing The Balance Of Power In The Art World

Market headlines about whether China is number one, two or three in global auction sales may only be the tip of the iceberg of what is in the making. Looking at its auction houses, private museums and collectors, one may picture a very different landscape in the art world in the not too distant future.

Last week, Poly Culture Group Corporation, part of the $61 billion state-run empire Poly Group, and owner of Beijing Poly International Auction, the world’s third largest auction house, announced that it is filing for an initial public offering. The news did not provoke much fuss in the West, perhaps due to the modest size of the IPO ($330 million), but it is indicative of its ambitions to grow global and should not be ignored.

Even more interesting is what its Chief Executive Jiang Yingchun said during the press conference: “We are big in the art auction market in mainland China but we still have a long way to go to become the biggest auction house worldwide.” A modest statement that some could actually read as the proof of its goal to become largest auction house in the world. With nearly $1 billion in sales in 2012, Poly is still far away from Christie’s or Sotheby’s, but it was only launched 8 years ago, compared to the Western houses’ 250 year history. One could argue it might be only a question of time until we see an auction of Poly or Guardian (another Chinese auction house), in New York or London.

The numbers coming out of China are staggering. If just the top 1% of China's population are wealthy enough to drive up the global prices at auctions that's still 13 million people, or about the same population of the entire State of Florida.  GL

Famed Highwaymen come to Pompano Beach - March 21-22 - posted by Florida Fine Art Blog

Famed Highwaymen come to Pompano Beach

Nine painters will sell more than 100 works at Sample-McDougald House on March 21-22.

Get an up-close look at a unique part of Florida's art history when the famed Highwaymen painters gather to exhibit and sell their vibrant works in Pompano Beach.
Nine of the self-taught African-American painters are showing more than 100 works, from their signature royal poinciana to Everglades sunsets and moonlit beaches, at the historic Sample-McDougald House on March 22.
This is the largest public gathering of Highwaymen at a single venue, with Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, James Gibson, John Maynor, Roy McLendon, Willie Reagan, Carnell Smith, Doretha Hair Truesdell and Charles Walker scheduled to attend.
The Fort Pierce painters got their nickname because they sold quickly painted works — sometimes still wet — from the trunks of their cars along U.S. Highway 1 in the 1950s and '60s. The group of 26 artists was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Nine have died.
Their vivid, colorful landscapes hang in homes across the United States, as well as in museums, city halls and the White House.
This is the third year the event has been co-sponsored by the home's preservation society and the Pompano Beach Historical Society.

If James Gibson is included count me in.  I try and never miss an opportunity to see James.  Mary Ann Carol is another great Florida Artist and always a pleasure to talk to.  With Al, Roy and Willie exhibiting as well this event is really special.

The first painting I ever sold was a highwaymen painting and through the years I've been blessed to get to know many in the group. At this point they are a Florida institution and an important part of our cultural heritage.  Please go to this show, buy a painting and support these artists! GL
